Harvesting Innovation: A Visit to the Volcani Institute

I recently had the privilege of visiting the Volcani Institute to strengthen our AI collaborations with the Israel National Digital Agency. I was incredibly impressed by the variety of innovative research and applications being developed there, showcasing the transformative potential of technology in agriculture.

From farm to fork, the projects are tackling critical challenges. A few examples that stood out include:

  • Agricultural supply chain optimization: Addressing the staggering issue of ~50% produce loss from the field to the consumer.
  • Wearable technology for livestock: Advanced nose-rings for cows that monitor cardiac and respiratory metrics to maintain herd health.
  • Spectral data collection: Using drones equipped with special cameras to gather essential information from the air.
  • Robotic plant health monitoring: Developing precise robotic arms that identify plant diseases by measuring electrical indicators.

We were also introduced to other fascinating work, including improving fruit cultivation through gene editing and managing urban forest health with advanced sensors.

Most importantly, I found partners at the Institute who share our vision. They understand the critical need for centralized AI infrastructure to maximize efficiency, share knowledge, and promote joint innovation within the government. It was an inspiring and affirming experience.
