AI by Mandate? There’s a Better Way to Build an AI Culture

A recent rumor suggests a tech giant like Microsoft might make AI use mandatory for employees, even tying it to performance reviews. As someone who lives and breathes AI—building with it and advocating for its adoption—I believe this approach is not just a misstep, it's fundamentally poor leadership.

I am probably the first to say that AI is the most powerful tool in our professional toolbox today. However, forcing it upon people through top-down mandates is the opposite of innovation. Instead of teaching, encouraging, and providing great resources, this strategy relies on what feels like a threat. It’s a clear sign of weak management, not a forward-thinking strategy.

Talented people don’t need to be coerced into using powerful tools that make them better at their jobs. What they truly need is a supportive environment: access to the right technology, comprehensive training, genuine inspiration, and the freedom to experiment without fear of failure.

This is the core difference between building a genuine AI culture and simply slapping a shiny AI sticker on your organization. If you want to integrate AI effectively, give your people the tools, trust, and autonomy they need. Then, watch them run with it.
